Brokers Are About to See Inside Your Operation — Is Your Paperwork Ready?

Getting freight has always meant proving the basics: active authority, insurance on file, a clean inspection record. That bar just moved. Brokers are starting to look inside your operation — how you hire, how you keep your driver files, and how you respond when something unsafe happens.

The news

On October 26, Tenstreet announced CarrierProtect, a tool that lets brokers examine a carrier’s internal safety practices: driver hiring standards, driver qualification files, training, and how the carrier responds to unsafe driving. It also creates dated records of what a broker looked at when it picked a carrier — a paper trail that matters a lot more after recent court scrutiny of broker carrier selection.

Tenstreet says the product does not roll everything into one overall safety score. Instead, individual metrics are compared against peer groups in quartiles, and carriers voluntarily share aggregated information — not individual driver records.

There is a small-carrier angle worth knowing: Tenstreet’s existing Pulse Fleet tool is free for owner-operators and small fleets. It helps organize your records and lets you share information about your operation with brokers — a way for a one-to-six-truck outfit to show its work without joining a big carrier’s network.

One honest caveat: this is a product announcement, not proof of results. Nothing yet establishes how widely brokers will adopt it, whether it earns insurance discounts, or whether it actually opens freight doors for small fleets. How peer comparisons treat very small fleets with thin records is also an open question.

What this means for car haulers

Your files are becoming part of your sales pitch. Authority and insurance get you in the door. If brokers can now compare your hiring, training, and qualification files against other carriers, the operator with clean, organized paperwork wins loads the sloppy operator never hears about.

Small does not have to mean invisible. The free Pulse Fleet option means an independent hauler can put his safety story in front of brokers in the same format the big fleets use. If you run clean — licensed, insured, documented — this kind of transparency works for you, because it separates you from the unqualified capacity that has been undercutting rates.

Get your house in order before a broker asks. Driver qualification files, maintenance records, insurance certificates — if they are scattered across a glove box and three email accounts, fix that now, while it is your choice and not a condition of getting loaded.

The bottom line

Freight is going to the carriers who can prove they run right, not just say it. That is good news for legitimate car haulers — if your paperwork proves it.
